Reunion News
Shipmates we are rapidly approaching the October 5 thru 8 2008 reunion dates. Please take time to fill out the attached Registration Form, mail it to Bob Ahlersmeyer, and make your hotel reservations today. Don and Marilyn have spent a lot of time to see that our trip to the Quad Cities in October will be an enjoyable one. One of the possible side trips to the "Field of Dreams" in Dyersville may require the rental of a Fifteen Passenger Van, the cost for this would be about $150.00 plus gas. That would be about $20.00 per person if at least fifteen people go. There are thirty rooms blocked for the dates 5-8 October. Reservations must be made by 5 September to guarantee the $89.00 per day rate. For those flying into Quad Cities and want shuttle service to the Stoney Creek Lodge, it is recommended that you call the Lodge before leaving home to schedule the shuttle service and then call upon arrival to have the shuttle dispatched. The trip is about 15 minutes, so there may be a slight delay before you are picked up. If anyone is arriving by bus, the bus station is about two blocks from the lodge, and there is no shuttle service. Amtrak's station is about fifty miles from the Quad Cities, and no shuttle service is available from there. When talking to the hotel I was informed that there were several reservations made for three days checking out on 8 October. Remember the closing Banquet is scheduled for the evening of 8 October. If calling the 800-659-2220 number for reservations, press 1 for Illinois and then 4 for the Quad City site. |

Page 2 A message from our President I would like to extend an invitation to
our upcoming 7th annual NOXUBEE Shipmates Reunion October 5th - 8th.
Don and Marilyn Andress have truly gone all out to make sure there are
lots of activities for all. So let's repay their efforts with a
strong attendance! The hotel sounds great as well as the location -
right on the Mississippi River. Please contact fellow shipmates who
possibly haven't attended recently and encourage them to attend. As
Dick states, "Please complete the registration from now and get it in
the mail". Time flies, as we all know, so please mark your
calendars, and make plans to attend this great event. |

| Vietnam Vets Exposed to Agent
Orange
There are several men that served aboard
the Noxubee while the ship was operating in Vietnam being treated for the
effects of Agent Orange. There are others that have requested VA
assistance and have been turned down for the same treatment. Anyone
who served during that period are encouraged to contact your shipmates and
offer assistance with letters verifying boots on the ground; mail runs,
stores runs, fueling, and any other reasons for being on shore in
Vietnam. From information received it appears close to ten percent
of the crew could have been affected. This number only reflects
those that I have had contact with and does not include shipmates from
that time that we have not located to date. |

| Hi Everyone, I'm Cindy Loney, widow of Gregory "Greg" P. Loney. Greg passed away on 4/21/08, and I'm trying to get an award from Agent Orange. Greg and I had tried to get benefits before he passed, but they turned us down. He had only written a claim for asbestos. I was told I needed fellow shipmates to write a letter for me verifying that Greg had boots on the ground or someone from his unit that is receiving an award for Agent Orange. I don't know if this will help me, but Greg did write a story in the web site called "Navy Days and Navy Nights". In it he refers to the dates he was assigned to the Noxubee in June 1969 until August 1972. I would really appreciate any help I could get from any of his shipmates or anyone that has been in the same situation and has since been approved for coverage.
Sincerely, |
|
