In June of 2006 I printed a note From Barbara (McCall) Mitchell. She was informing us of former Commanding Officer of the Noxubee Lt James McCall’s (her father) health. Since placing the note in the newsletter several members have tried to contact Barbara, her e-mail address had been changed? I attempted to locate her son David Mitchell and also attempted to call LT McCall’s home but the number has been disconnected. If any one has information on how to contact the family please forward the information on to me. The following shipmates have crossed the Quarterdeck Howard L Pabst LCDR 10-27-1965 to 08-01-1967 10-21-2006 I think it would be appropriate to put in the next newsletter that Howard Pabst passed away last October. As you will recall Howard was the first CO of the Noxubee after she was brought out of mothballs. I believe it was 1965, or it could have been 1966. She was refitted in Norfolk and we the sailed to Pearl Harbor where she was home ported. Then, of course, we were off to Viet Nam. Howard was a career officer, having graduated from the Academy. He held several commands subsequent to the Noxubee (the last as Commanding Officer of the Naval Training Station in Orlando), retiring as a Captain. His wife Jean still lives in Orlando He was buried in Arlington the past Monday. My wife, Barbara, and I were fortunately able to attend. As you might imagine it was a very moving experience.
